DEWALT upgrades three tool part of the original DEWALT FlexVolt System that debuted in 2016.  The upgraded tools are FlexVolt 7-1/4 IN. Circular Saw (DCS578), FlexVolt 4-1/2 – 6 IN. Grinder (DCG418), and FlexVolt Reciprocating Saw (DCS389).

The upgrades to these three tools mean that the Circular Saw (DCS578) is up to 47% more powerful, the Grinder (DCG418) is up to 30% more powerful, and the Reciprocating Saw (DCS389) is up to 19% more powerful than their predecessors.  This was achieved with new software, motor, and hardware upgrades.

UPGRADE DISCLAIMER

First, it is important to know that the FlexVolt battery is not exactly 60-volts.  Maximum initial battery voltage (measured without a workload) is 60 volts. The nominal voltage is 54.  This type of measurement applies to many different brands, not just DEWALT.

Next, the DEWALT DCG418 Angle Grinder with a (DCB609) 9.0 Ah 60V FlexVolt battery has up to 30% more power vs. DEWALT DCG414 Angle Grinder with a (DCB606) 6.0 Ah 60V  battery.  Some of the increase in power is because the DCB609 9.0 ah battery has 21700 cells where the DCB606 6.0 ah battery has 18650 cells.  The 21700 cells can produce and hold more amps than the 18650 cells.

UPGRADED ANGLE GRINDER

While clearing the air on some of the claims may seem to be a bit negative, the FlexVolt tools have revolutionized power tools since 2016.  Today the FlexVolt line has 20 tools and is considered by DEWALT to be its premium line.  Realistically, these upgrades took some of the most powerful DEWALT tools and made them even more powerful.  The DEWALT FlexVolt Angle Grinder has been considered the most powerful battery-operated angle grinder in its size range.

The ergonomics of the DCG418 grinder allows for the tool to come with guards for using both 4-1/2″ and 6″ wheels.  The angle grinder has a spindle lock with a 5/8″ spindle.   New and old models share the same an E-clutch and kickback brake protection.  The Kickback Brake engages when a pinch, stall, or bind-up event is sensed and the electronic brake engages with maximum force to quickly stop the wheel, reduce the movement of the grinder, and shut the grinder off.  The E-Clutch activates in less than a tenth of a second when a pinch/stall is detected, shutting down the motor.

The design of the FlexVolt angle Grinder has not been changed in the upgrade.  Oddly enough, the style has not been adopted to the new 20-volt tools.  The ergonomics of the DCG414 and DCG418 are unique.  They allow for a small grip that is very similar to a drill with a larger trigger and easy to use trigger safety.  The smaller grip circumference allows for an easy grip on the tool in odd cutting areas.  The grip alone was something that made us really enjoy the tool and continue to pick it up over and over rather than other models since it came out.

The new DCG418 has 600 more max watt output and 0.8 more horsepower than the DCG414.  There is no doubt you can feel those differences.  You feel a slight bit less difference when you equip both new and old tools with the 9.0 ah FlexVolt battery.
