Technology and hype seem to be all the rage these days in marketing, especially in the tool market.  There are a ton of new tool lines and even some new names hitting the market with what they each call the best tools you will use, period.  They all can’t be right, so we are here to cut the BS for you.

First, I believe Makita is an engineering company and not a marketing company.  Makita has some absolutely amazing tools that just do not hit the mainstream market for one reason or another.  There are other tool companies out there who are very widely known and loved and they are marketing companies more than engineering companies.

With that said, Makita recently released the 40V max XGT line in the USA to help give some of their tools more power for professional use.  The XGT line is new and not compatible with the 18-Volt line.  Makita, being a group of engineers, decided that it was important to build tools with more volts to power the demands of contractors in the cordless market.  That sounds like marketing hype, but it is not.   This 40-Volt XGT line has batteries that are the same size as most 5.0Ah 18-Volt batteries and push some amazing specifications through the new tools.  If there is one company out there that said “We had to do this, trust us” Makita would be one of the few I would trust.  This new line is full of good stuff!

The new Makita 40V max XGT Brushless ½” Hammer Driver-Drill (GPH01Z) is probably the most technologically advanced and most powerful drilling and driving tool on the market.  This drill excels in applications in wood and metal, but will also dabble in masonry drilling. The Makita GPH01Z is powered by a Makita-built brushless motor that delivers 1,250 in.lbs. of Max Torque.  The Makita 40V max XGT Brushless ½” Hammer Driver-Drill has two-speed settings (0-650 and 0-2,600 RPM and 0-9,750 and 0-39,000 BPM).  Did you notice the higher RPM in speed 2?  Most battery-operated drills have a 2,100 RPM max.

Continuing to lead as an engineering company, the Makita GPH01Z provides a super smooth trigger with an electronic digital clutch with 41 settings in low speed, 21 settings in high speed.  The clutch settings not only stop the drill automatically at a set torque but in some lighter duty modes, they also slow the speed of the drill to produce more control and accuracy.

As you would expect with any drill with this much power and technology, Makita included Active Feedback-sensing Technology (AFT) that turns the motor off if the rotation of the accessory is suddenly forced to stop.  This is a kickback control that can save the user from serious injury.

The Makita GPH01Z has more three-letter designations in its specifications than any other drill on the market.  Well, it seems that way because there is one more that we have yet to talk about.  Makita also designed this drill with Extreme Protection Technology (XPT) to help the tool live a prosperous life in dust, wet and nasty conditions.  We know employees are not easy on tools and Makita designed their tool to take that abuse.  That is shown in the reinforced gear housing and all-metal chuck.

The XGT platform is built for professional use and that is not just a marketing tag line.
