When you first contact the owner, ask a lot of questions about the machines condition and the way he used it.  Find out how many owners it has had and why they are selling it.  Listen close and even take notes if you are looking at multiple machines.  In some ways, you want to be a detective and see if you get the same story all the way through the viewing of the machine.  The Can-Am Maverick X3 is a powerful machine and many take that for granted and roll them or hit things causing damage that can be costly to fix.  Look for anything that could give you hints the machine was damaged and the first hint might be the stories the owner tells you.

If you are not comfortable looking the machine over mechanically, you can always take the machine to a dealership and have the service department give it a look.  Even if you do not plan on taking it to a dealer, you can always ask if the owner would allow it.  If they hesitate or would not let you, that could be a sign of trouble.
