One of the most iconic brands in DIY, Craftsman, was purchased by Stanley Black & Decker a while back and is now pumping out power tools for the serious DIY’er. There are different levels of Craftsman Power Tools, but the Brushless tools are no joke and give you performance that is on par with some pro tools. In this video, we review the Craftsman V20 Brushless 7-1/4″ Circular Saw, model CMCS550B.
Craftsman claims up to 75% more power from the V20 7-1/4 in. Cordless Circular Saw over the brushed version. To be fair, you need to be using a 6Ah or 9Ah battery to see that gain in power. With these larger battery packs, this brushless motor provides 5,000 no-load rpm and has the torque to maintain speed under load.
The Craftsman V20 Brushless 7-1/4″ Circular Saw is VERY similar to the DEWALT FlexVolt, FlexVolt Advantage, Power Detect, and XR Brushless circular saws. They share the same stamped-aluminum shoe, upper metal guard, 2-9/16 in. depth of cut at 90, 2 in. depth of cut at 45, and a bevel capacity of 56 degrees. This Craftsman also has an LED with a large sight window to allow you to see the cut line.
Available for an additional cost is a dust collection port attachment that the user can attach a vacuum to for a cleaner work environment. Since this is so similar to the DEWALT circular saw with the same option, we are going to go out on a limb and recommend you purchase that attachment if you want a cleaner workspace. They Work.
When we review many DIY tools, we do not push them very hard too fast. We obviously get cutouts and more heat because of the DIY design. In this video, we push this circular saw farther than we would push others, mostly because we feel it is so close to the DEWALT. We did get some heat, but it never timed out. I think that speaks mountains for the brand and the quality that is available for a great price.
